turkish bath/hammam sink

I think most of you know what a Turkish bath or hammam is. They are similar to saunas. I am not going to get into how Turkish baths work in detail but, I am going to talk about their marble stone basins that I love, called kurna. Visitors laying on hot steamed stone slabs pour cool water from these basins over themselves using hammam bowls, while preparing for body scrubs and then soap massages. That sounds good doesn't it?!

I came across these basins several times when I was pinning on Pinterest and loved their looks so much, I even created a hammam board. Around two years ago I saw a couple of them at a local Anthropologie and silly me I did not buy it. It was a great one too!

A year ago I found another one at materialculture. I jumped all over it. We had to transform it from kurna into a sink by having a drain hole drilled. We also had to raise the existing faucet.



I waited for almost a year and finally the good old marble Turkish hammam sink is in! It sure has some character. A little bulky, but I kinda like that:) I love the structure and the rugged texture of this old carrara marble. It is now sitting on a Chinese cabinet surrounded with small Turkish hammam bowls, hammam towel, soap holder box and Indian lassi cup.

my indian chakki crush - update

As some of you may know I have been looking for an Indian chakki table/pouf and drooling over their pictures for a long time. I even posted about my chakki crush here . I am glad some designers discovered these unique beauties that were originally used as flour mills and gave them a new life.

This gorgeous chakki was my first find during a recent visit to Material Culture. It was a little pricey so I decided to wait for a bargain... I am glad I waited...

Of course, no surprise, I found it at HomeGoods.

I was in a HomeGoods and there it was! That day I took its picture along with some Turkish items that I liked. I did not purchased it that day. It looked too big and I was looking for one with removable cushion so I could used it as a table. But as soon as I arrived home I knew I made a mistake! So next day I immediately went back to see if it was still there and surprisingly nobody had bought it! I guess it was meant to be :)

Here I found a perfect corner for it next to my Indian door. I believe the leather is camel (thanks to google search), never seen one before, it has kind of thick hard leather and the wood is carved teak. I decorated it with my Turkish kilim pillow and Indian sari throw. So happy with the result :)

my flower vignettes...

I recently posted about how in love I am with peonies. Here are some pictures of peonies and roses around my house. I wish they would last forever...

Kitchen, Chinese screen, tetsubins and ginger jars with peonies. Ginger jars are great for displaying fresh flowers.



White roses, books and a few favorite items are framed with a Chinese tray from HomeGoods. Love this old Turkish pottery. It has a great patina and texture.



Same roses on the coffee table with my favorite marble buddha head from Material Culture, red coral from ebay (I glued it to a Chinese stand) and a hand paper weight from T.J.Maxx.

I have been seeing traditional Indian chakkis used as an ottoman, a stool with cushions or used as a table in designer homes lately. They look amazing in any space.

Chakkis originally are Indian mills used to grind wheat and other grains. They are beautifully carved round shaped wood with low legs holding a stone mill.

Nowadays they are also used as ottomans, stools or tables in home decor.
